What Does Matthew 26:24 Mean?
Jesus sets two truths side by side without softening either. His death proceeds as it is written -- foreseen and foretold in the scriptures. And yet the man through whom it comes bears real responsibility, so heavy that never being born would have been better for him.
The purpose of God does not excuse the treachery of man, and the treachery of man does not derail the purpose of God. Judas is no puppet, and heaven is not surprised. The woe is spoken in grief, not relish -- a last bell tolling for a man still able to hear it.
