What Does Matthew 26:43 Mean?
A second time Jesus comes back for companionship and finds sleep instead. Matthew adds the human detail kindly: their eyes were heavy. Grief and the long night have undone their resolve.
Scripture does not hide the smallness of the saints at the great moments. These same heavy-eyed men will one day pray through the night for the church; tonight they fail, and Jesus bears it without bitterness. He simply returns to prayer, modeling the persistence they cannot yet give.
