What Does Matthew 26:42 Mean?
The second prayer moves a step beyond the first. No longer if it be possible, but if this cup may not pass away from me, except I drink it -- and then the very petition He taught His disciples to pray: thy will be done.
In Gethsemane Jesus prays His own taught prayer and means it at infinite cost. Acceptance deepens with each return to the Father. Prayer did not remove the cup; it readied the Son to drink it -- which is often what prayer does in His followers too.
