Found in human form, Christ humbled himself to the point of death, even death on a cross.

What Does Philippians 2:8 Mean?

The descent goes deeper still. Being found in fashion as a man, Christ humbled himself further and became obedient all the way to death, and not merely death but the death of the cross, the most shameful and agonizing end the ancient world knew.

Each step takes Christ lower: from the form of God, to the form of a servant, to human likeness, to obedience, to death, to the cross. Love drove him down to the very bottom. The cross was reserved for slaves and criminals, a death of utter humiliation, and the Lord of glory embraced it for our sake. His obedience was complete, holding nothing back. This is the depth of the humility Paul sets before the Philippians, a self-giving that stopped at nothing. The mind of Christ is a mind willing to descend all the way down in love for others.
