What Does Matthew 26:9 Mean?
The objection has numbers behind it: the parallel account in Mark prices the ointment at three hundred pence, nearly a year of wages for a laborer. Sold and distributed, it could have fed many.
The argument is true as far as it goes, and Jesus never belittles care for the poor; He commands it constantly. But a good cause can become a weapon against a better moment. Generosity toward God and generosity toward neighbor are not rivals, and the heart that truly loves the one will not long neglect the other.
