What Does Matthew 3:15 Mean?
Jesus answers John's protest gently but firmly. He asks John to permit it for now, because in this way they will fulfill all righteousness, doing fully what God's purpose requires. John yields and baptizes him.
In submitting to baptism, Jesus does not confess sin but takes his place beside sinners and embraces the path of full obedience to the Father. He does what is right not because he must be cleansed but because he chooses to walk the whole road of righteousness with and for his people. His humility here sets the pattern for a life poured out in obedience.
