What Does Matthew 8:28 Mean?
Having crossed the sea, Jesus arrives in the country of the Gergesenes, on the eastern, largely Gentile side of the lake. There two men, possessed by evil spirits, come out from the tombs to meet Him. So violent are they that no one could pass that way, and they dwell among the graves, cut off from the living.
The picture is grim: human beings dominated by dark powers, driven to a place of death and isolation, beyond all human help. This is the territory into which Jesus deliberately came. The storm has been stilled; now a deeper darkness is confronted. Where others would not venture, the Lord goes, carrying His authority into the very haunts of evil and the realm of the dead to set captives free.
