What Does Nehemiah 9:1 Mean?
The festival season has just ended. Now the people reassemble in a different posture: fasting, dressed in sackcloth, with dust on their heads. These were the outward signs of grief and humility, the body speaking what the heart felt.
Joy and sorrow over sin are not enemies. Having tasted God's goodness in the feast, the people are moved to grieve what had separated them from Him. True repentance is not driven by despair but by love already received. The heart that has been near to God feels most keenly the weight of its wandering.
