God declares that He has already reduced proud Edom to something small and despised among the nations.

What Does Obadiah 1:2 Mean?

Speaking directly to Edom, God announces the verdict before describing the crime. The proud mountain kingdom, which trusted in its rocky strongholds, is told that in God's reckoning it has been made small and held in contempt among the very nations it once looked down upon.

The word Behold calls the reader to attention. What a nation believes about itself and what God knows of it can be opposite things. Edom felt great; God names it small. The verse quietly warns every heart that measures itself by its own pride: true stature is not what we claim but what God sees.
