Paul widens the greeting to include Apphia, Archippus, and the whole congregation that meets in Philemon's home.

What Does Philemon 1:2 Mean?

Having greeted Philemon, Paul names two others and then the gathered believers. Apphia and Archippus were likely part of the household; Archippus is called a fellow soldier, a comrade in the spiritual struggle. In these early days, believers met not in dedicated buildings but in homes like this one.

By addressing the whole church, Paul gently broadens what might seem a private matter. The plea for Onesimus will be heard by the community, not whispered in a corner. This reminds us that reconciliation is rarely a purely private affair; how we treat one another is witnessed and shaped by the family of faith that surrounds us.
