Context

This verse concludes the great passage on Christ's humility and exaltation, with universal confession of His lordship redounding to the Father's glory.

What Does Philippians 2:11 Mean?

Paul completes the picture of Christ's exaltation: not only will every knee bow, but every tongue will openly confess that Jesus Christ is Lord. This confession is the verbal counterpart to the bowing knee of the previous verse -- creation not only submits in posture but acknowledges in word. To confess "Jesus Christ is Lord" is the most fundamental affirmation of Christian faith, declaring that the One who humbled Himself now holds supreme authority. The title "Lord" carries the weight of divine dignity, the same honor Scripture reserves for God.

Crucially, this universal confession is "to the glory of God the Father." The exaltation of the Son does not compete with the Father's glory but magnifies it; the Father is honored when the Son is acknowledged as Lord. Father and Son are revealed working together throughout this passage -- the Father exalting the Son, the Son's lordship redounding to the Father's glory. This guards the reader from imagining any rivalry within the divine purpose; the whole movement is unified. For the believer, confessing Jesus as Lord is not merely a future certainty but a present calling -- to align one's words and life now with what all creation will one day declare, and in doing so to glorify the Father.

In the Original Language

The verb "exomologeō" (confess) means to acknowledge openly and fully; "Kyrios" (Lord) is the title carrying divine dignity, used in the Greek Scriptures for God Himself.

Application

Confess Jesus as Lord with your words and your life today, joining now in the declaration that all creation will one day make, to the glory of the Father.
