Context

This verse introduces the celebrated passage describing Christ's humility and exaltation (verses 6 through 11), grounding Paul's call to humility in the example of Jesus.

What Does Philippians 2:5 Mean?

Paul points believers to Christ Himself as the pattern for the humility he has been urging: have the same mindset that Jesus had. This short verse is the hinge of the chapter, turning from Paul's commands about humility to the supreme example that gives those commands their power. "This mind" refers back to the lowliness and other-centered concern of the previous verses. Rather than leaving humility as an abstract ideal, Paul grounds it in a Person -- the attitude that shaped how Jesus thought, lived, and gave Himself.

The verse introduces one of Scripture's most profound passages, in which Paul will describe how Christ, who was in the form of God, humbled Himself, took the form of a servant, and became obedient even to death. The point is not merely to admire Christ's humility but to share it -- to let the same disposition govern the believer's relationships. "Let this mind be in you" is an invitation to ongoing transformation, a reshaping of how one thinks about status, service, and self. The reader is called not to imitate Christ from a distance, but to be inwardly conformed to His way of regarding others, allowing His mind to become the believer's own.

In the Original Language

The verb "phroneō" (let this mind be) refers to a whole way of thinking, disposition, and attitude -- Paul calls believers to share the very mindset that governed Christ.

Application

Ask God to reshape your inner attitude after the pattern of Christ, so that humility and self-giving love become your natural way of thinking.
