Psalm 24:2

Psalm 24:2 explains why the earth belongs to God: because He founded it. The verse uses imagery familiar to ancient Near Eastern cosmology, picturing the earth resting upon and founded by the seas and floods. In ancient imagination, the waters represented the chaotic forces that God subdued and ordered at creation. By saying God "founded" and "established" the earth on the seas, the psalm emphasizes that God's sovereignty extends over even the wild and formless things—the waters over which He reigns.

The double language—"founded it upon the seas" and "established it upon the floods"—reinforces the idea of a secure, divinely ordered creation.
