Context

This verse completes the promise begun in verses 3-4: those who meet these moral and spiritual qualifications experience God's blessing and righteousness.

What Does Psalm 24:5 Mean?

Psalm 24:5 turns from the question of who may ascend to the blessing for those who do. The person with clean hands and a pure heart "shall receive the blessing of the LORD, and righteousness from the God of his salvation." This verse promises two connected gifts: blessing and righteousness. The blessing is God's favor, His goodness poured out on those who come to Him rightly. Righteousness here means vindication—being declared right or innocent. In the context of approaching God, righteousness also means right relationship with Him.

Notice that God is called here "the God of his salvation." This phrase indicates that the blessing comes not as arbitrary favor but as part of God's saving relationship with His people. Those who seek God with clean hands and a pure heart find that He saves them—rescues them from their own emptiness and vanity, from the bondage of divided loyalty. The blessing they receive is not wealth or power in the worldly sense, but restoration to a right relationship with their Creator. They are vindicated because their longing for God itself testifies that they belong to Him. The verse transforms the question of worthiness into an encounter with grace: as you come before God with integrity, you discover that He meets you with blessing and declares you righteous—not because you perfectly earned it, but because you genuinely sought Him. This is the culmination of the ascending journey: those who climb God's mountain do not return empty-handed.

In the Original Language

The word berakah means blessing and carries the sense of God's favor and abundance flowing toward the one blessed. Tsedaqah (righteousness) means right relationship and vindication.

Application

As you come before God with integrity, trust that He meets you with blessing—not because you are perfect, but because your genuine seeking of Him is met by His grace and vindication.
