Psalm 62 affirms God as rock and refuge amid threats. Verse 8 widens the psalmist's personal trust into an invitation for all people to rely on God and be honest with him.
What Does Psalm 62:8 Mean?
This verse calls people to trust God constantly, to pour out their hearts honestly before him, and to find in him a refuge. Having steadied his own soul in the earlier verses, the psalmist now turns outward and urges others to do the same. It is an invitation to a whole way of relating to God.
Three movements fill the verse. "Trust in him at all times" makes trust continual, not reserved for emergencies or good days but a steady posture in every season. "Pour out your heart before him" invites complete honesty, the unguarded telling of all that is within -- griefs, fears, hopes, and complaints alike. The image is of emptying a vessel, holding nothing back from God. And the ground of both is the reason given: "God is a refuge for us." Because God is a safe place, one can both trust him always and speak to him freely. The word "Selah" calls for a pause to let the truth settle. This verse beautifully joins two things people sometimes separate -- steadfast trust and raw honesty. With God, the believer need not choose between them; trust is what makes such honesty safe.
In the Original Language
The Hebrew batach ("trust") means to rely on or feel secure, and machaseh ("refuge") denotes a shelter or place of safety.
