Sin weighs heavily, but God's cleansing action will remove transgressions.

Context

Acknowledgment of sin's burden, with trust in God's cleansing power.

What Does Psalms 65:3 Mean?

The psalmist shifts from praise to honest confession. The word 'prevail' suggests that sins have gained strength or dominance—a realistic acknowledgment of the human condition. Yet even in this struggle, the psalmist expresses trust that God, not sin, has the final say. The personal 'me' combined with the communal 'our' speaks to both individual guilt and collective human weakness.

The hope rests entirely in God's action: 'thou shalt purge them away.' Purging means complete removal, cleansing at the root. This verse teaches that acknowledging sin's reality is not despair but the beginning of trust in God's power to restore. Divine forgiveness is not passive tolerance but active cleansing.

In the Original Language

כָּפַר (kaphar), 'purge' or 'atone'—literally to cover or wipe away, used throughout Scripture for God's restoration of broken relationship.
