Psalms 77:19 Meaning and Explanation

'Thy way is in the sea, and thy path in the great waters' places God's activity in the most vast and mysterious realm. The sea, untamed and deep, becomes the sphere of God's movement. Unlike paths on land that leave visible marks, paths in water are effaced immediately—no trace remains. Yet God has a way and path even there, moving through the chaos of waters with purpose and direction.

'and thy footsteps are not known' affirms the hiddenness of divine action. Footsteps normally reveal passage and direction, but God's footsteps—his actions and movements—are not visible to human sight. This speaks to the inscrutability of God's providence: he moves and acts in ways that transcend human perception and understanding. Yet mystery need not mean absence; the unknown path is still a path.
