What Does Psalms 91:16 Mean?

The psalm closes on two gifts, and God is still the One speaking. First, with long life will I satisfy him. The word for satisfy means filled to contentment, the deep settledness of one who has had enough and is at rest. For an ancient reader a long, full life was among the richest blessings imaginable, days that did not feel empty but complete. Yet the verse does not stop at length of days. It ends by lifting the eyes higher: and shew him my salvation. There is something God wants us to see that reaches past even a long life, His own rescue, unveiled.

That final word, salvation, is the doorway the whole psalm has been walking us toward. In Hebrew it is yeshuah, the very word that lives inside the name of Jesus. The salvation God promised to show would one day stand in the world with a face and a name. A full life is a gift, but the deepest gift is to be shown the Savior Himself. The psalm that began with shelter ends with the One who is our shelter, the salvation of God made visible in Christ.
