What Does Revelation 21:14 Mean?

John's eye moves from the gates to the foundations of the wall, twelve in number, inscribed with the names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb. Where the gates carried the tribes of Israel, the foundations carry the apostles, joining the old and new together in one structure.

The image teaches that the people of God are built upon the witness of those who knew and proclaimed Christ. Paul wrote that the household of God is founded on the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus as the chief corner stone (Ephesians 2:20). Here that foundation is made visible and eternal. The reader sees that faith in Christ rests on a sure footing, the testimony of those first sent by the Lamb, and that this foundation stands firm forever.

Revelation 21:14 in the Original Language

apostolos (ἀπόστολος), 'apostle' -- one sent out as an authorized messenger, here the twelve commissioned by Christ.
