What Does Revelation 4:1 Mean?
With the letters to the seven churches finished, the vision turns upward. John sees a door standing open in heaven, and the same commanding voice he first heard, loud and clear as a trumpet, calls him to come up and be shown things that lie ahead. A threshold is crossed: from messages to the churches on earth to a glimpse of the realities behind them.
An open door is an invitation. Heaven is not sealed off from those whom God calls; the Lord opens the way and bids His servant come up higher. Before John is shown anything troubling about the future, he is first lifted into the presence of the One who holds the future. The pattern still comforts: we are summoned upward to see the throne before we are asked to face what is coming.
