What Does Revelation 4:2 Mean?
At once John is in the Spirit, carried beyond ordinary sight. The first thing he sees is a throne, already standing, firmly set in heaven, and One seated upon it. Before any detail of color or creature is given, the center of everything is named: a throne, and Someone enthroned upon it.
The whole vision begins here, and so does its comfort. Whatever John will be shown afterward, the governing fact is that heaven has a throne that is occupied. God reigns, settled and unshaken. The seat of all authority is not empty and not contested. For churches under pressure, this is the steadying word: above every earthly power sits the One on the throne, and He has not stepped down.
