What Does Revelation 4:5 Mean?
From the throne itself break flashes of lightning, peals of thunder, and voices, the same signs that surrounded God at Sinai when He came down in fire and cloud. Before the throne burn seven lamps of fire, which John is told are the seven Spirits of God, the fullness of God's own Spirit present in that place.
The throne is alive with power and holiness; this is no quiet, distant seat. Yet the same God whose presence thunders also pours out His Spirit, full and complete, before all who stand there. Awe and nearness meet at once. The Lord is overwhelming in majesty and yet gives His Spirit freely, that those who worship Him may be lit by His fire and not consumed by it.
