Stretching out before the throne is a sea as clear and still as glass, smooth crystal where one might expect restless waters. Nearest of all to the throne, in its midst and around it, are four living creatures, covered with eyes in front and behind, fully awake and seeing in every direction.
The sea, often a symbol of chaos and danger, lies perfectly calm before God; nothing churns or threatens in His presence. The living creatures, full of eyes, miss nothing of His glory and never look away. Together they say that before the throne all turmoil is stilled and all attention is fixed on God. Where the Lord reigns, the troubled deep becomes glass, and creation gives Him its undivided gaze.
