What Does Revelation 6:16 Mean?
Terror puts a desperate prayer in their mouths. They cry to the mountains and rocks, 'Fall on us,' begging to be buried rather than face the One seated on the throne and the wrath of the Lamb. It is a striking phrase: wrath belonging to the Lamb, the very figure of gentleness and sacrifice, now revealed as the One whose holiness no rebel can endure.
That the Lamb who was slain should also be the Lamb whose face the guilty cannot bear is the heart of this scene. The same Christ who offers Himself in mercy will not be mocked; love refused becomes a presence too holy to stand before. The reader is moved to a better response than the mountains: not to flee that face, but to seek it now in repentance, while it is still the face of grace.
