Context

This verse describes the blessedness of the great multitude who came out of great tribulation, now standing before the throne and serving God in His presence.

What Does Revelation 7:17 Mean?

Revelation 7:17 is a tender promise that the Lamb will shepherd His people and God Himself will comfort them by wiping away every tear. In a beautiful reversal of imagery, the Lamb becomes the Shepherd. The one who was slain now cares for the great multitude who have come through tribulation, gathering and guiding them like a faithful shepherd tending his flock.

To "feed them" means to shepherd and provide for them, and to "lead them unto living fountains of waters" recalls the green pastures and still waters of the beloved shepherd psalm. These living waters picture the satisfying, life-giving presence of God, an endless supply that never runs dry. The most comforting promise comes last: "God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes." This is the intimate touch of a loving Father personally removing every sorrow. For those who have endured suffering, persecution, and loss, this verse holds out the hope of complete consolation. The wounds of earthly life will not have the final word. The Lamb who suffered understands their pain and leads them into a future where grief is gone and God's nearness satisfies forever. It is a vision meant to sustain weary hearts with hope.

In the Original Language

"Feed" is "poimaino" (ποιμαίνω), to shepherd, tend, and care for a flock. "Wipe away" is "exaleipho" (ἐξαλείφω), to wipe out or blot away completely.

Application

This verse comforts those who suffer with the assurance that the Lamb shepherds them now and God will one day wipe away every tear and sorrow.
