What Does Revelation 7:5 Mean?

The roll is called tribe by tribe, and it opens with Judah, the tribe of kingship and the line from which the Messiah comes. Then Reuben, the firstborn, and Gad follow, each contributing twelve thousand to the sealed company.

By naming the tribes one at a time, the vision shows that God's saving work is personal and particular, not a faceless mass. He gathers from every family of His covenant people. That Judah is named first quietly lifts the eye toward the One who came from that tribe, the Lion of the line of Judah, in whom every promise to these families finds its yes.
