What Does Romans 3:17 Mean?
The quotation from Isaiah continues. After destruction and misery comes the deepest lack of all: the way of peace remains unknown. Cut off from God, the human heart cannot find its way to true rest, however it searches.
Peace here is more than the absence of conflict; it is wholeness, the shalom of a life rightly ordered before God. That it is unknown is the saddest line in the catalog. Yet the whole letter is moving toward the One who is our peace, who reconciles us to God. What sin made unknown, Christ makes the believer's own.
