What Does Romans 5:4 Mean?
This verse completes the chain Paul began in verse 3: tribulation works patience, patience works experience, and experience works hope. Each link grows out of the one before, describing how God matures faith through trial rather than apart from it.
'Experience' here means tested, proven character -- the kind of trustworthiness that has been through the fire and held. And such proven faith does not end in despair but in hope. The believer who has endured and been refined finds their confidence in God deepened, not diminished, by what they have passed through.
