Trials test and purify faith, more precious than gold, so that it brings praise and glory when Christ appears.

What Does 1 Peter 1:7 Mean?

Peter reaches for the refiner's furnace. Gold is purified by fire, yet gold finally perishes; tested faith outlasts it and is worth more.

The fire, then, is not the enemy of faith but its proving ground. What emerges is not destroyed but vindicated, found at last unto praise and honour and glory when Jesus is revealed. The believer's hardest seasons are quietly minting something that will shine on that day. Suffering is given a destination.

In the Original Language

dokimion (δοκίμιον), 'trial' -- the testing or proving of something to show it is genuine.
