The prophet sees a solid-gold lampstand crowned by a bowl that feeds oil through seven pipes to seven lamps.

What Does Zechariah 4:2 Mean?

Asked what he sees, the prophet describes a golden lampstand recalling the one in the tabernacle, yet enriched: a reservoir sits atop it, channeling oil through many pipes to the seven flames. The detail of constant supply is the heart of the picture.

The lamp is meant to burn without ceasing, and here its fuel flows to it directly, without a priest to tend the wick. The image quietly promises that the light God calls His people to bear is sustained by God's own provision. Where Israel's temple was to be a light, the supply for that light comes from above, not from human effort alone.

In the Original Language

menorah (מְנוֹרָה), 'candlestick' -- the golden lampstand that gave continual light in the sanctuary.
