Zephaniah 3:8

Zephaniah 3:8

Therefore wait ye upon me, saith the LORD, until the day that I rise up to the prey: for my determination is to gather the nations, that I may assemble the kingdoms, to pour upon them mine indignation, even all my fierce anger: for all the earth shall be devoured with the fire of my jealousy.

God calls His faithful to wait for the day He rises to judge all nations with the fire of His zeal.

What Does Zephaniah 3:8 Mean?

This verse is the hinge of the book. God calls His people to wait upon Him until the day He rises up. His determination is to gather the nations and assemble the kingdoms to pour out His indignation; the whole earth will be consumed by the fire of His jealousy. It is the climax of the judgment theme, gathering all the threads of wrath into one decisive day.

Yet notice the posture commanded: wait ye upon me. To wait on God is the opposite of despair; it is trust that He will act in His own time and that His justice is sure. The fire of His jealousy is the burning of a love that will finally purge all evil from His creation. And remarkably, from this verse of universal judgment the book turns immediately toward grace. Those who wait on the LORD will see His salvation, for His final word over His people is not wrath but joy.

In the Original Language

chakah (חָכָּה), 'wait' -- to wait expectantly, to long for and trust in someone's coming, here a posture of hopeful patience toward God.
