Context

Paul explains why love outlasts gifts: present knowledge is partial, but a future of complete, face-to-face knowing awaits, making love the abiding reality.

What Does 1 Corinthians 13:12 Mean?

Paul contrasts present limitation with future fullness using one of his most memorable images. "Now we see through a glass, darkly" -- in his day, a mirror was polished metal that gave only a dim, imperfect reflection. So too our present knowledge of God and His ways is real but blurred and incomplete. "But then face to face" promises a day when that obscurity gives way to direct, unhindered encounter.

The parallel that follows deepens the hope: "now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known." Our knowing is currently fragmentary, like seeing pieces of a whole. But a day is coming when we will know fully -- knowing God as fully as we are already known by Him. That last phrase is profound: God already knows us completely, and one day our knowledge of Him will rise to match that intimacy. This verse offers immense comfort to those troubled by unanswered questions and unresolved mysteries. The partial vision is not the final word. The dimness is temporary. Faith now reaches toward a future of clear sight and full knowledge -- not the cold accumulation of facts, but the warm, personal knowing of being face to face with the God who has always known us. The best knowing lies ahead.

In the Original Language

The Greek "esoptron" (glass) refers to a polished-metal mirror giving an imperfect image. "En ainigmati" (darkly) means in a riddle or obscurely. "Epignōsomai" is to know fully.

Application

When faith leaves you with unanswered questions, take comfort that present dimness is temporary; a day of full, face-to-face knowing of God lies ahead.
