Context

John opens his letter by grounding everything in a message he received directly from Jesus, written to assure believers and to confront teachers who downplayed sin and the importance of holy living.

What Does 1 John 1:5 Mean?

John sums up the gospel message in a single image: God is light, and there is not a trace of darkness in him. "Light" here is not just brightness but moral and spiritual perfection -- truth, holiness, and openness with nothing hidden or corrupt. John heard this "message" directly from Jesus, and he passes it on as the foundation for everything that follows in the letter. If God is wholly light, then fellowship with him cannot coexist with a life lived in darkness; the character of God sets the standard for the character of those who claim to walk with him. The phrase "no darkness at all" is emphatic in the Greek, ruling out any shadow, mixture, or hidden flaw in God. This becomes the test John applies throughout the letter: those who say they belong to God must let his light shape how they live, love, and tell the truth. The verse anchors believers in the certainty that the God they follow is utterly trustworthy and pure.

In the Original Language

The Greek phrase ouk estin oudemia ("is no... at all") stacks negatives for emphasis, and phos ("light") carries both the idea of radiance and of moral purity.

Application

Let the truth that God is wholly light draw you toward honesty and away from anything you would rather keep hidden.
