To claim fellowship with God while living in darkness is a lie that the life itself contradicts.

What Does 1 John 1:6 Mean?

John begins a series of tests. The first exposes a false claim: to say we have fellowship with God while we walk in darkness. Such a claim is contradicted by the life. To live in darkness while professing the light is to lie, and not to do the truth.

Truth here is not only spoken but lived. A person cannot belong to the God who is light and at the same time make a home in moral darkness. John is tender, but he will not let words substitute for reality. Genuine fellowship with God reshapes how we walk, drawing the whole life toward honesty and holiness.

In the Original Language

skotos (σκότος), 'darkness' -- moral and spiritual estrangement from God, the realm opposed to His light.
