The children of God and of the devil are revealed by righteousness and love for one's brother.

What Does 1 John 3:10 Mean?

John gives a clear mark of distinction. The children of God and the children of the devil are made manifest by how they live. Whoever does not do righteousness is not of God, nor is the one who does not love his brother.

Two tests stand together: righteousness and love. A life that ignores both reveals a heart not born of God. This is not meant to make us anxious but to clarify what genuine faith looks like. The children of God show their family likeness in upright living and in love for one another. John joins right doing and brotherly love as the twin evidences of belonging to God.
