What Does 1 John 3:5 Mean?
John points to the purpose of Christ's coming. He was manifested to take away our sins. And He was perfectly fit for this work, for in Him is no sin whatever.
The sinless One came to bear away the sins of the guilty. Only one without sin could lift the burden of sinners, and Jesus is that One. Here is the gospel's comfort: our sins are not merely covered but taken away by Him who had none of His own. John joins this to the call to holiness, for the Christ who removes our sin also draws us out of it, into His own spotless life.
