Having defined God's love through the sending of his Son, John presses the inevitable response: those who have been so loved must love one another.
What Does 1 John 4:11 Mean?
John draws the practical conclusion from everything he has said about God's love: "if God so loved us, we ought also to love one another." The little word "so" looks back to the cross -- the way God loved, by sending his Son as the sacrifice for our sins. That measure of love becomes the standard and motive for ours. The phrase "we ought" expresses genuine obligation; having received such love, we owe love to others. Yet this is not a cold duty but the natural overflow of being loved so greatly. John addresses readers as "beloved," reminding them they are themselves recipients of this love even as he calls them to give it. The logic is the heart of Christian ethics: God's love comes first and creates a responsibility and capacity to love. We do not generate love on our own; we pass on what we have received. Notice that the love is directed "one another" -- concrete, mutual love within the community. The chain is clear: God loved us in this costly way, therefore we must love each other in kind. Received love becomes given love.
In the Original Language
The Greek houtos ("so") points to the manner of God's love just described, and opheilomen ("we ought") marks a real obligation flowing from it.
