Though no one has seen God, when we love one another He dwells in us and His love is made complete.

What Does 1 John 4:12 Mean?

John joins the unseen God to visible love. No one has seen God at any time. Yet if we love one another, God dwells in us, and His love is perfected, brought to its goal, in us.

The invisible God becomes known through love. When His people love one another, He makes His home among them, and His love reaches its intended completion. Our love does not create God's presence, but it is the place where His presence is shown and His love matured. John offers a beautiful vision: the God no eye has seen is made visible in the love of His children, dwelling in them and perfecting His love through them.
