Peter grounds the call to holiness in God's own word from the law: be holy, for I am holy.

What Does 1 Peter 1:16 Mean?

Peter reaches back to the words God spoke to Israel and lays them on the scattered church without alteration. The command has not changed because the God who gave it has not changed.

The reason attached to the command is striking: holiness is asked of God's people because it belongs first to God himself. Believers are not told to invent a standard but to share in one. The same voice that set apart a nation now sets apart this dispersed family, calling them into the holiness that is his own nature.
