Believers, as living stones, are built into a spiritual house and a holy priesthood offering spiritual sacrifices through Christ.

What Does 1 Peter 2:5 Mean?

If Christ is the living stone, his people are living stones too, shaped to the same nature. Peter sees them being built together into one spiritual house, a dwelling for God.

And this house is also a priesthood. Every believer is drawn into the work of offering, not animals now, but spiritual sacrifices: lives, praise, obedience, love. These are made acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. Peter dignifies an ordinary, scattered church with priestly standing. No one is mere material in this temple; each stone is also a priest with something to bring.

In the Original Language

hierateuma (ἱεράτευμα), 'priesthood' -- a body of priests, a people set apart to offer to God.
