Context

Peter has been describing Christ as the living stone and believers as living stones built into a spiritual house. Verse 9 names their corporate identity and mission, echoing God's words to Israel in Exodus 19.

What Does 1 Peter 2:9 Mean?

Peter gives believers a fourfold description of who they are in Christ and then tells them why: to declare the praises of the God who called them out of darkness into light. Each title carries deep meaning drawn from Israel's calling at Sinai, now applied to all who belong to Christ. They are "a chosen generation" -- selected by God's own initiative; "a royal priesthood" -- privileged to draw near to God and serve Him; "an holy nation" -- set apart for His purposes; and "a peculiar people" -- a people for God's own possession, treasured and precious to Him.

These are not titles the readers achieved; they are titles God conferred. The word "peculiar" in older English means belonging especially to someone, a personal treasure. Together these descriptions lift the eyes of struggling believers above their hardships to remember their true standing. But identity carries purpose. The verse turns on the word "that": God grants this status "that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light." The transformation from darkness to light is real and dramatic, and the proper response is a life that displays God's character and tells of His mighty acts. The privilege of being God's people is inseparable from the calling to make Him known.

In the Original Language

The Greek "basileion hierateuma" means royal priesthood, and "laos eis peripoiēsin" describes a people for God's own possession, a treasured people.

Application

Remember who you are: chosen, royal, holy, treasured. Let that settled identity move you to live and speak in ways that show others the God who called you into His light.
