Peter continues his instructions for life in the last times, following the call to love with a call to serve. Verse 10 grounds mutual ministry in the gifts God has given each believer.
What Does 1 Peter 4:10 Mean?
Peter teaches that every believer has received a gift from God meant to be used in serving others, making each one a steward of God's grace. The phrase "every man hath received the gift" leaves no one out -- each member of the community has been entrusted with some God-given ability. These gifts are not given for private benefit but for the good of all: "even so minister the same one to another." To minister is to serve, and the gift finds its purpose when it is put to work for fellow believers.
Peter frames believers as "good stewards of the manifold grace of God." A steward manages something that belongs to someone else, accountable for using it well. The gifts are therefore a trust, not a possession, and the One they belong to is God. The word "manifold" means many-colored or richly varied, picturing God's grace as displayed through a diversity of gifts working together. No single believer carries the whole; each reflects a different facet of God's generosity. This vision dignifies every member and discourages both pride and passivity. When each person faithfully uses what they have received to serve, the varied grace of God becomes visible in the life of the community. Peter writes this amid suffering, where mutual service was vital to the believers' endurance and witness.
In the Original Language
The Greek "charisma" (gift) is a gift of grace, and "poikilos" (manifold) means many-colored or richly varied, picturing the diversity of God's grace.
