What Does 1 Peter 4:9 Mean?
Peter makes love practical. It is to open its doors: use hospitality one to another, welcoming fellow believers into home and table.
And the manner matters as much as the act, without grudging, without grumbling or reluctance. Hospitality offered with a sigh loses much of its grace. In a time when traveling believers depended on open homes, this was no small thing. Peter calls for a generosity that is glad, not resentful, a welcome given freely. The fervent love of the previous verse takes flesh here in the ordinary work of feeding and housing one another with a willing heart.
In the Original Language
philoxenos (φιλόξενος), 'hospitality' -- love of strangers, gladly welcoming guests.
