Context

Peter closes his letter with instructions to elders and to the whole community, urging humility toward one another and toward God. Verse 6 calls believers to submit to God's powerful care amid their trials.

What Does 1 Peter 5:6 Mean?

Peter calls believers to humble themselves under God's powerful hand, trusting that He will lift them up at the right time. The word "therefore" ties this to what came just before -- that God gives grace to the humble. Humility, then, is the posture that receives God's grace, and Peter urges his readers to take it up deliberately: "humble yourselves." It is an active choice, not merely something done to them.

The phrase "under the mighty hand of God" is rich with meaning. In the Scriptures, God's mighty hand is the hand that delivered His people and acts powerfully in history. To place oneself under that hand is to submit to God's strength and timing, trusting that the same hand that may allow hardship is also the hand that protects and saves. For believers facing suffering and pressure, this is a call to surrender rather than to grasp for control. The promise attached is sure: "that he may exalt you in due time." God Himself will do the lifting up, and He will do it at the proper moment -- "in due time" -- not necessarily on the timetable we would choose. The humility Peter commands is therefore not weakness or despair but confident trust that God sees, God is able, and God will act. Lasting honor comes from His hand, not from self-promotion.

In the Original Language

The Greek "tapeinoō" (humble) means to make low or bring down, and "hypsoō" (exalt) means to lift up or raise to honor.

Application

Choose to humble yourself under God's care instead of grasping for control. Trust His timing, knowing He will lift you up at the moment He sees best.
