The message of the Lord rang out from them in every direction, and reports of their faith traveled so widely that Paul had nothing left to add.

What Does 1 Thessalonians 1:8 Mean?

Paul pictures the word of the Lord 'sounded out' from Thessalonica like a trumpet or a peal of thunder rolling across the land. Their faith was not a private matter; it broadcast the gospel far beyond their city, until 'in every place' people had heard of their devotion to God. The news had outrun Paul himself, so that he 'need not to speak any thing.'

A church on fire becomes its own announcement. These believers did not merely hold the message; they amplified it, and their reputation for faith carried the gospel to ears Paul had not yet reached. This is the natural overflow of real conversion. When people truly turn to God, others hear about it, and the hearing draws still others to ask what could change a city so. Faith that is genuine rarely stays quiet for long.

In the Original Language

execheo (ἐξηχέω), 'sounded out' -- to ring out or echo forth, the sounding of a trumpet or the reverberation of thunder.
