Paul urges that prayer of every kind, including thanksgiving, be offered for all people.

What Does 1 Timothy 2:1 Mean?

Paul turns to the life of the gathered church and puts prayer first. He piles up words for prayer, supplications, intercessions, thanks, to show its fullness and reach.

The scope is striking: prayer for all people, not only for friends or fellow believers. A praying church carries the whole world before God. To intercede for others is to share, in a small way, God's own care for them.

In the Original Language

deesis (δέησις), 'supplications' -- earnest requests arising from a sense of need.
