Paul reasons that one who cannot manage his own home cannot care for the church of God.

What Does 1 Timothy 3:5 Mean?

In a brief aside, Paul makes the logic plain: if a man cannot lead his own household, he is not ready to take charge of God's church.

The church is called God's own, a family dearer than any earthly home. Caring for it is a sacred trust. Paul simply asks that faithfulness be tested in the smaller circle before it is given the larger.
