What Does 2 John 1:4 Mean?
Having blessed his readers, the elder shares what has gladdened his heart: he has met some of the lady's children 'walking in truth.' The phrase pictures the Christian life as a road traveled step by step, where belief shows itself in the daily direction of one's life, in step with 'a commandment from the Father.'
His joy is heartfelt and great. There is no higher gladness for one who loves others in Christ than to see them actually living what they profess. The verse gently invites the reader to consider that truth is meant to be walked, not merely held — and that faithful, ordinary obedience brings real delight both to those who love us and to the God who calls us.
In the Original Language
peripateō (περιπατέω), 'walking' — literally to walk about, used for the whole conduct and pattern of one's daily life.
