What Does 2 Peter 3:13 Mean?
After the imagery of dissolution comes the promise that crowns it: "new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness." The old order passes not into nothingness but toward renewal. Grounded "according to his promise," believers "look for" this — a remade creation where righteousness is fully at home.
Here is the hope that makes everything else bearable. The fire that ends the old world clears the way for a new one, and in that new creation righteousness "dwelleth" — settles down and lives permanently. All the wrong that grieves the faithful now, all the corruption of the false teachers, will have no place there. Peter does not give the believer a vision merely of destruction but of restoration and home. This is the destination toward which the whole letter has pointed: a world set right, where God's people dwell with righteousness forever. The longing for that day steadies the heart through every present trial and corruption.
