What Does 2 Thessalonians 2:8 Mean?
Once the restraint is removed, the lawless one will at last be "revealed" in full. But Paul announces his defeat in the same breath as his appearance. He rises only to fall, for the Lord will "consume" him "with the spirit of his mouth" and "destroy" him "with the brightness of his coming." The very breath and radiance of Christ are enough to undo him utterly.
The imagery, echoing Isaiah's prophecy of the Messiah striking with the breath of His lips, is meant to dwarf the enemy. However terrifying the man of sin may seem, he is no match for the Lord; a word, a brightness, and he is finished. There is no prolonged struggle, no doubtful outcome. For believers who feel small before the powers of evil, this is bracing assurance: the climactic clash is utterly one-sided. Christ does not merely win; He wins effortlessly, by His mere appearing.
